FLORIDA SCHOOLS CONTINUE TO TAKE STRIDES TO EDUCATE CHILDREN ON PERSONAL SAFETY THROUGH THE "BE SAFE!" PROGRAM
ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. (March 3, 2008) - The AmberWatch Foundation (AWF) is thrilled to announce the implementation of the “Be Safe!” education program into the regular curriculum for all elementary schools in Florida’s Collier and Orange counties. The “Be Safe!” education program is the leading abduction and molestation prevention program in the state, offering a cost-free course developed by the AmberWatch Foundation to teach children and parents ways to arm themselves against potentially dangerous situations.
Last month, Collier County, in association with the local sheriff’s department, announced the adoption of the “Be Safe!” education program district-wide. Law enforcement officials are currently undergoing training and the “Be Safe!” program will be introduced to students in spring 2008, just in time to reach the children of Collier County before the summer vacation begins.
Orange County Florida School District, the 12th largest school district in the United States, announced the implementation of the “Be Safe!” program to all 125 elementary schools. Training will begin April 15th with an introduction into the classrooms this spring.
On average, a child is reported missing every 40 seconds and more and more schools and organizations are realizing the need for education about personal safety. Through ongoing support by local law enforcement, educators, parents and community members, the “Be Safe!’ campaign continues to arm children with the knowledge of how to stay safe.
Since its introduction in 2005, the “Be Safe!” program, consisting of a basic classroom curriculum with group discussions, workbook activities and assignments, has been adopted in several school districts throughout Florida, representing more than a million students, and is currently offered and taught in school districts across the state.
Florida-based supporters and partners of the AmberWatch Foundation, and its “Be Safe!” program, include the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Beach, The School District of Palm Beach County, Habitat for Humanity Broward County, Safe and Drug Free Schools Advisory Council, Florida State Senator Dave Aronberg and Broward County District Commissioner Ilene Leiberman.
